Spring Sunshine, Cleaner Cushions

Getting Started

Before, my outdoor cushions were in a sorry state. But, after a few weeks of spring sunshine, I felt optimistic about giving them a good clean. It wasn’t easy, but the stains on my cushions had become a bit of a problem. Stains like bird poo, mildew, and dirt had accumulated over the winter, but I was determined to get my cushions looking like new again.

A Deep Clean

  1. Deep cleaning is crucial for removing tough stains and grime from your cushions.
  2. You should start by giving your cushions a quick vacuuming to remove dirt, pollen, and other debris.
  3. Check the labels on your removable covers to see if they can be washed.
  4. For non-removable covers, mix a homemade washing solution of warm water and washing-up liquid.
  5. Apply the solution to the cushions, let it sit for 15 minutes, and then scrub the fabric with a soft brush.
  6. Wash the cushions with a mild soap and water, or hand-wash them if you’re unsure.
  7. Let the cushions dry completely, either by air-drying them or by placing them on a washing line.
  8. If you notice any mildew, mix a solution of water and white vinegar and apply it to the affected area.
  9. Use sodium bicarbonate/baking soda to eliminate stubborn smells and apply it to the cushions for 1 hour or overnight.
  10. Apply a water-repellent fabric protector to your dry and clean cushions to prevent future stains.

Quick Clean-Ups

  • Use a lint roller to remove dirt, pollen, and other debris from the crevices of your furniture.
  • Use a damp microfibre cloth to wipe down your cushions regularly and prevent dirt and grime from building up.
  • Use a spray-on spot cleaner to quickly clean your cushions.
  • Stand your cushions up in direct sunlight every few weeks to kill bacteria and dry them out.

Storage

Proper storage is key to protecting your cushions.
Before storing, make sure your cushions are clean and dry.
Remove the cushion covers and wash them if necessary.
Store the cushions in a waterproof storage box or bag.
Label the storage container with the contents and the date.

By following these simple steps, you can keep your outdoor cushions looking fresh and clean all summer long. Remember to give them a good clean before storing them at the end of the summer, and to use a waterproof storage container to protect them from the elements.

It’s also worth noting that a little prevention can go a long way in keeping your cushions clean.
